See Clearly with Laser Vision Corrective Surgery
March 19th, 2011Being able to see clearly upon waking up in the morning, maybe for the first time in your life, might seem unbelievable. Leaving behind glasses and contact lenses for good might be a dream come true. If so, laser vision corrective surgery is worth consideration.
The are some guidelines to qualifying for this type of surgery. You must be at least 18 to correct myopia or hyperopia and at least 21 to correct astigmatism. Your refraction must have been stable for an allotted amount of time, you cannot be pregnant or nursing and certain medications are not compatible. Also, if you are not within the prescriptive range, this type of surgery will not help.
While this is a quick procedure (about 15 minutes per eye) there are risks associated with it and it is important to take them into consideration before opting for this elective surgery. Your eye can be injured while the flap is being cut on the surface which takes about 6 months to heal before surgery can be tried again. Under or over corrections can be made or regression can occur. You might notice halos, glares or dry eyes. Most of these risks can be taken care of with time and eye drops, but it is a non-reversible surgery.
After your eye doctor assesses your eyes and determines that you are a good candidate for laser surgery your appointment for better eyesight can be made. The procedure should take only about 15 minutes per eye. You will be given medicine to relax you and your eyes will be anesthetized and cleaned. Your eyelashes will be draped, so as not to interfere with the laser, and your eyes will be held open by retractors. Once your eyes are prepared and a flap is created on the surface of the eye, a laser will re-sculpt the corneal surface while you focus on a fixed point. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops will be given to ward off problems, though you might have sensitive or scratchy eyes for a short while. You will, however, be able to see without corrective eyewear!
Laser vision corrective surgery is something to consider if you are ready to get rid of glasses or contact lenses. Should you be a good candidate for this procedure, you will never see the same again!
